Ignite Sport

Shift is a wellbeing initiative, just for young women! With a particular focus on physical activity. This programme seeks to:

  • Increase participation in physical activities by creating fun, social, affordable events
  • Increase awareness of wellbeing through education and role modelling
  • Empower young women to be change-makers in their schools and communities, through leadership development.

Ignite Sport is running Shift in partnership with the Shift Foundation. 


Ignite is running three Shift programmes in the Hutt Valley:

‘Just Shift It’ provides physical activity opportunities, co-designed with the young women involved. Think yoga, dance workshops, Zumba, firebreak climbing, ice skating! We also bring in professionals to help us explore our wellbeing, through topics like mental health, relationship skills, managing stress.

‘Just Shift It’ Holiday Programme is based on the same concepts but run during the school holidays.

‘Shift Leaders’ is our leadership development programme, taking small groups of young women through either a 20-week course or a leadership conference, to build confidence, awareness of leadership ability, and be empowered to affect change in their worlds.

What some young women had to say about one of our Just Shift It Holiday events

The first day I came to Shift was really memorable. Everyone was so friendly. There were so many girls from different years from the school all coming together, having fun, just doing something together.

I’ve done Yoga, Zumba, Dancing, the Riser walk, the self-defence class – that was real fun…I’d not done any of those things before Shift. They were all really good. 

I’m leaving this lesson feeling way more confident in my ability than I’ve ever felt before.
